Your support will assist us to continue our research and content development, the greater our resources, the more we can do.
The more we have an accurate understanding of what is happening to nature, the more we can all do to protect what remains of our living planet.
This is also an opportunity for philanthropists to be part of an ongoing project that tells independent stories about the natural world, stories that will help us to better understand what is happening to species and places on our precious planet Earth.

Here we analyse the data by species from the five shooting zones in Queensland (an additional zone is non-shooting).
The actual commercial take in Queensland in 2023 was 597,750 from a quota of 2,210,400. The full year quota for Queensland in 2024 is 2,486,400, to 6 August 2024 the actual take was 270,187. The Nature Knowledge Channel’s full year forecast for the commercial exploitation of Kangaroos in Queensland in 2024 was 568,800, slightly less than the actual in the previous year. Even allowing for delays in reporting and calendarisation issues, it could be the case that the 2024 actual is even lower than our forecast.
Red Kangaroos were exploited for commercial gain in all 5 shooting zones in Queensland to 6 August 2024.
The full year 2024 quota for all zones was 1,151,300, the actual number killed for commercial gain was 133,545 (11.6 per cent of quota). Number of female Red Kangaroos killed for commercial gain was 12,887 (9.2 per cent of total kill). We estimate that in the period, in addition,10,950 joeys were killed by blunt force trauma or decapitation and are not accounted for in the data.
Eastern Grey Kangaroos were exploited for commercial gain in 3 shooting zones in Queensland to 6 August 2024. There was no commercial exploitation of Eastern Grey Kangaroos in zone 2 in the first 7 months of 2024.
The full year 2024 quota for the 3 shooting zones was 1,117,100, the actual number killed for commercial gain was 107,932 (9.6 per cent of quota). Number of female Eastern Grey Kangaroos killed for commercial gain was 15,238 (14 per cent of total kill). We estimate that in the period, in addition,13,400 joeys were killed by blunt force trauma or decapitation and are not accounted for in the data.
Wallaroos were exploited for commercial gain in all 5 shooting zones in Queensland to 6 August 2024.
The quota for all zones was 218,000, the actual number killed for commercial gain was 28,710 (13 per cent of quota). Number of female Wallaroos killed for commercial gain was 148 (0.5 per cent of total kill). We estimate that in the period, in addition,130 joeys were killed by blunt force trauma or decapitation and are not accounted for in the data. Why the share of females is so small is a question, if accurate, probably a result of small size.
NOTE: Damage mitigation permit quota information for 2024 was not available at time of writing.
