Legs eleven: The adorable Purple Swamphen

Life in the air

“Marching on water’s edge, strong scarlet bill and head shield, very long legs and long toes an orange red, our Purple Swamphen is in the family Rallidae”.

We see Purple Swamphens Porphyrio porphyrio in small groups in wetlands and alongside streams, these groups are likely to have more males than females and the birds share the task of incubating their eggs and looking after the young birds. A sub-species exists in the south west of the Australian Continent.

The species has a wide distribution that includes New Guinea, New Zealand and the south west Pacific.

We do not need to say a great deal so watch the short film of the Purple Swamphens as they feed their young.
